What is a jake turkey?

A jake is a young, immature male turkey. Here's some key information:

  • Age: Generally, a jake is between 1 and 2 years old. After two years, they are considered mature toms.

  • Appearance: They are smaller than adult toms. A jake's beard is usually shorter (less than 6 inches) than a mature tom. Their spurs (the sharp, bony projections on their legs) are also less developed, often appearing as small nubs.

  • Behavior: Jakes are often seen in gangs, or small groups of immature males, and will frequently associate with the adult toms. During mating season, they attempt to display and compete for hens, but they are often dominated by older, more experienced toms.

  • Hunting: Jake turkeys are legal to hunt in many regions. Hunters may specifically target them for easier success due to their relative inexperience compared to older adult%20turkey.
